The flag’s light blue field symbolises the state's abundant waters and expansive skies, while the dark blue shape on the hoist side represents the outline of Minnesota itself.

Centered within the dark blue shape is a white eight-pointed star, inspired by the North Star, which aligns with Minnesota’s motto, "L’Étoile du Nord" (French for "The Star of the North"). This symbol of guidance and leadership is a key part of the state's identity and also reflects a design found in the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda.

This modern and inclusive design replaces the previous state flag, ensuring a distinct and timeless representation of Minnesota’s people, landscapes, and history.
